Cosmetic Dentistry encompasses dental procedures which are not necessary for health purposes, but serve to improve appearances. Cosmetic procedures include veneer fittings, teeth-whitening and exchanging amalgam fillings for composite resin ones. Because they are elective surgeries, they are often expensive.

Cosmetic Dentistry

Cosmetic dentistry generally falls in the elective category of care. People who seek cosmetic dentistry treatments generally want to change the appearance of their teeth – usually for the better – as opposed to correcting an existing medical condition.

But that doesn’t make cosmetic dentistry any less significant of a procedure, nor does it diminish any of the final results that have, in many cases, profoundly positive effects on the people who receive the procedures.

One of the most common cosmetic procedures involves replacement of (silver or gold) amalgam or mercury dental fillings. For many decades, these fillings were the only option available, but technological advancements have made composite resin fillings a very popular option. Composite fillings are tooth colored and, therefore, encourage a more-natural fit among other teeth. Because of this, many people are opting to have the old fillings removed and replaced with composite fillings.

Other common cosmetic dentistry procedures include dental veneers, composite or porcelain laminates that correct chipped and cracked teeth and cover extensive discoloration; whitening, the bleaching of teeth to reverse the discoloration; inlays/onlays, porcelain or composite based indirect fillings adhesively applied to decayed teeth; composite bonding, that repairs chipped, discolored or otherwise damaged teeth with a material that looks like enamel and smile makeovers that involve a comprehensive study of the smile and oral area. The result is typically the use of one or more of the aforementioned procedures to correct specific conditions that are affecting the overall appearance of the smile.

Considerable research should go in to selecting a cosmetic dentist. Start with a referral from your regular dentist who already has an intimate knowledge of your dental issues. An initial consultation with a cosmetic dentist should be a somewhat casual experience where the patient has a chance to candidly discuss treatment options with the doctor who will ultimately perform the procedures. This initial visit may also include X-rays, intraoral photographs, upper and lower teeth impressions and a thorough dental examination. It may be also that this time is the best to discuss other considerations such as tooth shapes and sizes and colors. Beyond that, the initial consultation is also an opportunity for the patient to gauge how comfortable they are in the office environment.

Don’t forget that your cosmetic dentist isn’t the only one involved with your treatment. Inquire about the dentist’s preferred laboratory for constructing implements that could be implanted. The cosmetic dentist should be able to fully explain the procedure(s) that will be undertaken. Not only that, he/she should have a comprehensive knowledge of the products they will use and the laboratory processes that go into their manufacture. Some cosmetic procedures – such as teeth whitening – will require subsequent visits, many such visits in some cases.

Cosmetic dentistry is becoming a more and more popular choice for people who have suffered tooth damage of one sort or another and no longer want to live with damaged teeth. The results can include raised self esteem and confidence that can lead to other improvements in over all lifestyle and condition.
