How To Choose A Dentist
Like choosing a doctor, finding the right dentist is paramount for maintaining proper dental health and upkeep. Of course a well-trained dentist with the proper capabilities is important to ensure proper care is received. But beyond that, a good dentist can instill trust and confidence that will be immensely important in the process that may at some point include invasive procedures to correct a problem. At those times, it will be important for peace of mind to be able to depend on the dentist to do the job properly and with a professional demeanor.
General practice dentists are licensed to diagnose and treat a range of dental conditions, but they don’t – generally – administer anesthesia, or perform sophisticated procedures like oral surgeries. When the need arises for advanced techniques, the dentist will refer the patient to a specialist in a particular field. The American Dental Association recognizes nine specialized fields of dental practice. They are orthodontics, pedodontics, periodontics, prosthodontics, dental public health, endodontics and three variations of oral maxillofacial care: pathology, radiology and surgery.
Dentists fall into two main categories – Doctors of Dental Science and Doctor of Dental Medicine. Dentists usually work in conjunction with dental assistants or dental hygienists that provide initial care and generally perform some tasks like cleanings and teeth whitening. They may also take dental X-rays and develop radiographs, but all work done by a dental assistant is done so under the supervision of the dentist.
When considering a dentist for long-term care, there are a number of factors that should be thoroughly vetted in the decision-making process.
The period of time that a dentistry practice has been in business is a good predictor of the level of service provided. If the practice is established and been in operation for several years then that is a good sign that the doctor is well-trained and capable.
The prospective dentist should be able to thoroughly discuss educational background, specialized training and experience to the satisfaction of the patient. Ensure that degrees were awarded by an accredited educational institution. Generally, dentists and other medical professionals belong to professional societies comprised of their respective colleagues. Inquire if the dentist has active membership in any societies.
It is a good idea to inquire about which specific dental procedures the dentist is capable and certified to perform, even if the patient has no current problems. Dental issues arise – sometimes without warning – and it’s a good idea to find the proper match in a dentist before corrective measures are needed.
The patient should also ask him or herself whether the practice’s office and treatment areas are comfortable and geared toward the patient. Dental procedures can be a stressful situation and many doctors will provide additional amenities to lessen the burden and make the procedure move more smoothly. What is the demeanor of the dentist and staff? If they aren’t friendly and considerate at the front desk, chances are they won’t be during a dental procedure when a patient may need that comfort.
Proper due diligence will help ensure a healthy dentist patient relationship whereas a haphazard approach will likely result in equally chaotic care.
