Intended for mild corrections, Invisalign braces are actually clear aligners which appear nearly invisible when worn over the teeth, but gently push teeth into alignment over the course of months or years. They can be removed, but should be worn most of the day.

If only there were a way to avoid traditional style metal wire and bracket orthodontic braces for minor orthodontic cases. Well, there is. Invisalign is an orthodontic implement that is comprised of plastic aligners that are molded to fit the teeth and gently push them in to place. Just like fixed metal braces, only they’re clear plastic and removable.

Also like braces, Invisalign aligners – that have been on the market since 1999 – may be necessary for a duration that can range from several months to several years depending on the extent of correction needed. Invisalign, however, is not for all cases of crooked or misaligned teeth. For serious corrective needs, traditional braces offer more support and are far superior for the job – an orthodontist can best decide which option is best on a case by case basis.

Invisalign’s clear – or ‘invisible’ – braces are nearly unnoticeable at normal distances. They are also far more comfortable to the wearer. Metal braces can snag on lips and cheek tissue, causing bleeding and discomfort. Convenience is also at the heart of Invisalign’s enormous popularity. Invisalign aligners are not worn while eating so there is less occurrence of lodged food becoming difficult to remove. Regular dental hygiene routines do not have to be changed with Invisalign. Conversely, metal braces can be extremely difficult to keep clean. Usually Invisalign aligners are worn about 22 hours each day and are changed out every couple of weeks. Regular visits with the dentist or orthodontist will ensure the treatment is progressing as planned. Full treatment usually lasts up to 18 months.

An Invisalign fitting will take more than one office visit and can only be done by Invisalign certified practitioners. Most Invisalign practitioners offer free consultations to determine whether a person is a good candidate for clear aligners. This is also a good time to ask as many questions possible and share any concerns. Invisalign professionals are capable of discussing every aspect of the procedure.

The process begins with an overall oral evaluation during which time a mold of the teeth will be made using dental putty. The dentist will take several photos of the oral area at different angles. The pictures and mold are used to make a three-dimensional model of the patient’s teeth in an Invisalign lab. The company has patented simulation software to craft the model that will direct the design of the Invisalign aligners. Once the dentist receives the customized aligners, the patient will be fully consulted on their use and proper maintenance.

For minor orthodontic remedies, Invisalign alignments are a viable alternative to hard metal braces that can be cumbersome and even painful. People who have spacing or gaps in the teeth that are more than several millimeters won’’t be able to use Invisalign. Skeletal deformities and grossly misaligned jaws also require traditional braces as will people missing multiple teeth.

Check with individual insurance providers to see who may cover the costs of Invisalign. Because Invisalign is a cosmetic alternative to metal braces, it may not be covered in many insurance plans. Out of pocket costs can range from about $2,000 to more than $5,000.
